“The American Influence on Nazi Race Law: Assessing U.S. Responsibility”

James Q. Whitman (Yale)

Nazism triumphed in Germany during the high era of Jim Crow laws in the United States. Did the American regime of racial oppression in any way inspire the Nazis? The unsettling answer is yes.

James Q. Whitman is Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative and Foreign Law at Yale University, where he teaches criminal law among other subjects. He is the author of numerous books and articles on American and foreign law.
