Statement of Solidarity in Support of George Floyd

The faculty of the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies wish to express our anguish and anger over the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and other African American victims of racial aggression.  Their deaths are all too familiar.  Brutality at the hands of police and white racists has a long and despicable history in the United States.  As scholars and teachers of the Jewish experience, across time and place, we recognize the profound injustices to the African American community and the need for lasting change.  The rising potency of white supremacist groups adds to the urgency of the moment for us.  In keeping with Chancellor Rebecca Blank’s recent statement, the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies will redouble its efforts to expand its programming and curriculum in ways that confront and grapple with the persistent bigotry, discrimination, and inequality that plague American society.
